Skill Review: Teach Me Spanish

Teach Me Spanish is an interactive, language-specific Alexa skill developed by Status Quack to allure polyglots as well as learners interested in a singular target language. Though the learning segment is totally up to the user, what this voice app can do is coach users on Spanish vocabulary and its English version. No matter where the learner is based, Alexa is up and ready to engage and tutor with over 2000 Spanish words.

The compiled list of words falls into two major levels, namely basic and intermediate. Users can resort to both levels to learn the Spanish vocab along with its English translation which is clubbed with sample phrases to help them learn and retain better. The words are split as 1000 each into the two levels; and learners are free to switch between these levels by simply saying, “change level”. Moreover, the voice app offers users the ability to resume from where left off, making it convenient for them to pick up from the word they had last learned. To top it up, the skill offers a revision test after every short drill of 10 words for users to self-evaluate their learning progress. As part of the revision test, English meanings are rendered wherein users are expected to translate each of the provided words into its Spanish equivalent. Another highlight is the spaced repetition the skill allows to enable the user to repeat the words and sentences alongside Alexa’s utterances. But with all the positives aside, there seem to be a few downsides that could let down the learner at times. As for the spaced repetition and revision, Alexa provides no confirmation of the correctness of answers relayed by the user. To add to that the user has to opt for the paid option in order to access more than 10 words which otherwise is the daily limit for users accessing the free version of the voice app.
