Verdict

Poppy’s Elf Training is a highly interactive educational voice app developed by John Callahan to suit the interests of 5-8-year-olds. To render a magical effect, the creator of this voice skill has imparted an impeccable blend of music, sound effects, and character voices with a touch of finesse. Chosen as the finalist of the 2018 Alexa Challenges: Kids competition, this skill attempts to create a great educational experience for kids.

The character voice of Poppy is so mesmerizing that it lures the users to tag along and help her complete the 3 days certified Elf Training Program. With this educational skill, kids get to experience not just Santa’s North Pole mail room, but also the bakery, and toy factory, where users are allowed to answer math and phonics questions and thereby help Poppy advance in her training. The skill tosses multiple-choice questions to its users to help Poppy complete her daily tasks. Through this interactive experience, the skill offers learners the platform to learn words and their pronunciation. Yet, users have to bear in mind to enunciate the first alphabet of words accurately, if not they will be stuck on the same question with Poppy repeating the question unceasingly. Another key highlight worth mentioning is the superb voice-over experience woven into this skill. Besides the phonic games, there are tasks like baking cakes and sorting toys that Poppy carries out by quizzing kids on simple math and sorting skills. Three different kinds of tasks, related to mailroom, bakery, and toy factor, are assigned each day, totaling three days of training that the user can complete in a day. Then there’s the option for the user to resume from where left off provided it’s for starting the next day’s activity. Additionally, there’s the option to repeat the questions and overall the skill efficiently guides the conversation without any hiccups. All the more, upon completing 3 days of training users are surprised with a treat and that is to meet Santa by accompanying Poppy to her graduation ceremony as well as ask Santa for a Christmas gift. Well, that being said, there seem to be a few downsides that could let down the user at times. One of the let-downs is that the skill offers no provision to skip a question when unable to answer, thereby frustrating the user by unstoppably repeating the question. Last but not least, the voice app does not support a help feature to assist its users.

The VOGO Voice team scores this skill 4.5 out of 5 stars based on our rating system. Yet, you’ll have to try for yourself and see if it is a truly educationally oriented entertainment voice app designed to deliver both fun and learning and also an experiential meeting with Santa at the North Pole. Bear in mind to pace your enunciation as clear as possible so as to not to get stuck within the phonics question round. So if you’re up for some playful enjoyment, do try out the skill and see if it offers the thrilling experience you had anticipated.
